1. The Heliocentric Reality: An Optical Parallax
No planet physically travels backward in its solar orbit. Because Mercury is closer to the Sun than Earth, it completes a full orbit in just 88 Earth days. As Earth orbits at 365 days, our planet regularly overtakes Mercury on the inside track. Just as a passing train makes an adjacent slower train appear to move backward against the landscape, Mercury appears to drift westward through the zodiac from our Earthbound vantage point.
