However, when early astronomers developed celestial coordinate systems, calculating angles from the surface of an oblate spheroid with mountains and valleys was mathematically complex. The Moon is different. Orbiting Earth at an average distance of approximately 384,400 km, the Moon is close enough that Earth's 6,371 km radius makes a massive visual difference.
If an observer in New York looks at the Moon at the same instant as an observer in Sydney, Australia, they are viewing the Moon along two convergent lines of sight separated by nearly 12,000 kilometers.
This optical displacement is known as horizontal parallax. At maximum, lunar parallax causes a visible shift of $1^circ 54'$ across the ecliptic. In astrology, two degrees is the difference between a planet being in the 1st House versus the 12th House, or crossing from the watery depth of Pisces into the fiery initiative of Aries!
